Types of Toggle Bolts

A toggle bolt is a two-part hollow wall anchor consisting of a machine screw and a toggle mechanism that opens behind the wall surface. Sometimes called butterfly anchors, toggle bolts use spring-loaded wings or solid metal channels that open behind the wall to spread the load over a wide area — giving them far more holding power than plastic expansion anchors or self-drilling drywall anchors. Browse our selection above or contact our sales team for help choosing the right toggle bolt for your project. There are two main design families:

  • Spring-Wing Toggle Bolts (Butterfly Anchors): The traditional design. A pair of spring-loaded metal wings fold flat to pass through a drilled hole, then snap open behind the wall. The wings and machine screw tighten together to clamp the mounted item to the wall surface. Simple and economical for most light-to-medium-duty hollow wall anchoring jobs.
  • Strap Toggle Anchors (TOGGLER® SNAPTOGGLE®): A newer, heavy-duty design that uses a solid metal channel instead of hinged wings. Polystyrene straps pull the channel flush behind the wall, then snap off at the surface. The anchor stays in place even when the bolt is removed — making strap toggles reusable and ideal for applications where you need to remove and reinstall the fixture. SNAPTOGGLE anchors carry up to twice the load of traditional wing toggles in the same bolt size and require a smaller installation hole.

Toggle Bolt Sizes & Specifications

Toggle bolts are sized by the machine screw thread they accept and the grip range (wall thickness) they accommodate:

  • Spring-Wing Toggles: Available in 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", and 1/2" diameter screws. The bolt length must be long enough to pass through the fixture, the wall, and fully engage the toggle wings.
  • SNAPTOGGLE Strap Toggles: Available in 3/16"-24 (BA), 1/4"-20 (BB), 5/16"-18 (BE), 3/8"-16 (BC), and 1/2"-13 (BD) thread sizes. Grip ranges from 3/8" to 9-1/2" depending on style. Long-strap versions (BAL, BBL) extend grip range up to 9-1/2" for thick walls, ceilings, and roofing applications.
  • Metric Options: SNAPTOGGLE metric sizes include M5, M6, M8, and M10 in both standard and long-strap versions.
  • Drill Bit Sizes: Spring-wing toggles require a larger hole (typically 3/8" to 1-1/4" depending on screw size). SNAPTOGGLE anchors install through a smaller hole — a 1/4" SNAPTOGGLE uses a 1/2" hole versus the 3/4" hole a traditional 1/4" wing toggle needs.

Toggle Bolt Weight Capacity & Performance

Toggle bolts are the highest-rated hollow wall anchor for load-bearing applications. Actual holding strength depends on the bolt size, wall material, and wall thickness:

  • In 1/2" Drywall: SNAPTOGGLE BB (1/4"-20) holds up to 265 lbs ultimate tensile pull-out. Industry practice is to apply a 4:1 safety factor, giving a recommended working load of approximately 66 lbs per anchor.
  • In Concrete Block: Pull-out values range from 802 to 1,745 lbs depending on anchor size and block type.
  • In Steel Plate: Up to 2,605 lbs (zinc-plated) or 3,150 lbs (stainless steel) ultimate tensile in 1/2" steel plate.
  • Shear Loads: Shear capacity in 1/2" drywall ranges from 247 to 406 lbs depending on anchor size.

Always use multiple toggle bolts for heavy items such as TV wall mounts, heavy shelving, grab bars, and overhead ceiling fixtures. Distribute the load across at least two to four anchors whenever possible.

Toggle Bolt Applications

Toggle bolts and strap toggle anchors work in a wide range of hollow and solid base materials:

  • Drywall & Gypsum Board: TV mounts, floating shelves, heavy mirrors, curtain rod brackets, towel bars, and grab bars when studs aren't in the right location
  • Plaster & Plasterboard: Picture hanging, light fixture mounting, and bracket installation in older homes with lath-and-plaster walls
  • Hollow Block & Cinder Block: Sign brackets, conduit hangers, equipment mounting, and shelving supports in commercial and
