Wedge Anchors

Wedge anchors provide a strong, permanent mechanical connection in solid concrete. As the nut is tightened, the expansion clip at the base of the anchor grips the inside of the drilled hole, creating a reliable hold for structural and industrial loads. Eugene Fastener stocks concrete wedge anchors in carbon steel, stainless steel, and galvanized finishes with diameters from 1/4 inch through 3/4 inch in both seismic-rated and non-seismic configurations. We stock brands including Hilti and Simpson Strong-Tie. Whether you need a 3/8 wedge anchor for light equipment or a 3/4 wedge anchor for structural base plates, we carry the sizes and materials your project requires.

Wedge Anchor Sizes and Materials

Eugene Fastener stocks wedge anchors in the most commonly specified sizes for structural and commercial construction.

  • Diameters: 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", and 3/4" wedge anchors
  • Lengths matched to required embedment depth and fixture thickness
  • Carbon steel (zinc plated) for general indoor and protected applications
  • Stainless steel wedge anchors (304 and 316) for corrosion-resistant and coastal environments
  • Galvanized wedge anchors for outdoor and high-moisture exposure
  • Seismic-rated wedge anchors for code-compliant connections in earthquake zones

Not sure which size you need? A wedge anchor must be long enough to pass through the fixture, plus meet the minimum embedment depth for the load rating. Contact us with your application details and we can help you select the right diameter and length.

How Does a Wedge Anchor Work?

A wedge anchor is a post-installed mechanical fastener designed for use in solid concrete. Here is how it works: a hole is drilled into the concrete to the correct diameter and depth, the anchor is inserted through the fixture and into the hole, and then the nut is tightened. As the nut turns, it pulls the anchor body upward, which forces a wedge clip at the bottom to expand outward against the walls of the hole. This expansion creates friction that locks the anchor permanently in place.

Wedge anchors are considered a permanent fastener — once installed and tightened, they cannot be easily removed without damaging the surrounding concrete.

Wedge Anchor vs Sleeve Anchor

Wedge anchors and sleeve anchors both fasten materials to concrete, but they work differently and suit different conditions. Wedge anchors are designed exclusively for solid concrete and provide higher load capacity. The expansion happens at the base of the anchor, creating a deep mechanical grip. Sleeve anchors use a full-length expanding sleeve and can be used in concrete, brick, and block — including hollow materials where wedge anchors would not hold. Choose a wedge anchor when you need maximum pull-out strength in solid concrete. Choose a sleeve anchor when working with masonry, brick, or block, or when the base material varies.

How to Install Wedge Anchors

  1. Drill a hole in the concrete matching the anchor diameter (a 1/2" wedge anchor uses a 1/2" carbide-tipped bit)
  2. Clean the hole with a brush or compressed air to remove dust
  3. Insert the anchor through the fixture and into the hole until the washer and nut are snug against the fixture surface
  4. Tighten the nut with a wrench — typically 3 to 5 full turns past hand tight, depending on the diameter
  5. Verify the anchor is secure and does not spin freely

For best results, ensure the concrete has fully cured (minimum 28 days for new pours) and that the hole depth exceeds the minimum embedment requirement for the anchor size selected.

Common Applications for Wedge Anchors

Concrete wedge anchors are used wherever a strong, permanent connection to solid concrete is required.

  • Anchoring steel base plates, columns, and structural members
  • Mounting heavy equipment and machinery to concrete floors
  • Securing handrails, guardrails, and safety barriers
  • Fastening electrical panels, conduit, pipe supports, and mechanical systems
  • Attaching shelving, racking, and storage systems in warehouses
  • Anchoring sill plates and ledger boards in construction
